If you employ workers that work at heights on construction sites, and you have not arranged to have your staff trained in a Ministry of Labour-approved program from an approved provider, you now have until October 1, 2017 to do so. However, in order to qualify for this extension, workers must have completed fall protection training before April 1st, 2015, and they must be able to prove that the training is valid. Workers must also be enrolled in a Ministry of Labour-approved training program before the October 1, 2017 deadline, and be able to show written confirmation of that enrollment. Workers may not work at heights until they have both a valid (not expired) proof of previous training and a written confirmation of enrollment in a Ministry of Labour-approved Working at Heights: Construction training program.

What if I am Waiting to Complete Training?
It’s a sure bet that Ministry of Labour inspectors will be out in full force this summer to ensure that any workers conducting work at heights on a construction project either already have their training or that they have proof of their previous training and written confirmation of enrollment in an approved training program. For many, this will not cause a problem; but, for those who haven’t completed their training or received their enrollment confirmation, the result could be:
- Costly fines
- Troublesome tickets
- Disruptive stop work orders
Who is Not Qualified for the Deadline Extension?
Individuals that have never completed any form of working at heights or fall protection training is not covered by the extension. Until they complete a Ministry of Labour-approved Working at Heights: Construction training program, any work conducted at heights is in contravention of O.Reg 231/91 S.7(1). The easiest way to avoid a fine or stop-work order for having untrained workers is to complete training ASAP!
