FenMan celebrates 25th anniversary of industry golf tournament

April 27, 2017  By Al Dueck president of Duxton Windows and Doors

They say perception is reality so perhaps its suitable that 2017 is recognized as the 25th anniversary event of the annual Manitoba window and door industry golf event – with a slight twist.  One of the most knowledgeable individuals on the topic, Roland Toker, advises that the very first Manitoba Window and Door Golf event was held in 1991.

Roland notes, “I had organized a bus load of 48 – and 4 Loewen Windows people went by car – to take part in a combination of a plant tour and a golf outing.  We all met at the St. Vital Curling Club at 7.30 am!”  The group stopped the bus in Steinbach for coffee and donuts (maybe it was even a Timbit stop?) and then continued on to Warroad, Minnesota for Marvin Windows Plant Tour.  This is where the real connection comes in as they enjoyed lunch at the Warroad Golf Club, enjoyed a round of golf followed by dinner and then the long bus ride back to Winnipeg!  Apparently, a version of the same event was repeated the following year, again by Roland.   Roland continues, “We then organized a Loewen Window plant tour in 1993 followed by a round of golf and dinner at the Quarry Oaks, a newer course for Manitoba.”  While another golf event happened at the Quarry Oaks course in 1994, we believe that at least a one year gap happened along the way – that we can’t account for – and we are therefore creatively coming up with the 25th Anniversary recognition!

Obviously, some good things evolved from these early beginnings of industry interaction and networking as it has continued ever since and morphed into the Fenestration Manitoba organization. 2017 would seem to be a very suitable year to recognize the achievements and contributions of numerous key individuals including Roland.  A committee was formed in about 1995 consisting of Aurel Robin, Lorne Hyles and Brian Epp to continue the planning and organizing of this event, more typically at Bel Acres for quite a number of years thereafter.

Nancy Zubriski, Executive director of Fenestration Manitoba is currently developing additional points of recognition and celebration for the 25th FenMan golf event with the direct support of Ryan Dudeck, President of Paramount Windows as well as executive member of Fenestration Canada.  The 2017 event has been booked for June 22nd at the St Boniface Golf Club, a new and different venue with excellent golfing and facilities.  We are extremely grateful for the on-going support of various industry members and suppliers without whom this would not be possible, including Acrylon, Amesbury, Aribell, WindowMaker, PPG Glass, Screenco, Truth, Veka, Cardinal and Pleasantside.
